cover love: beige |

Problem: Apparently I’ve yet to share my love of musical instruments on covers. Solution: I think I can remedy that with some cover art eye candy — namely Cecil Castelluci’s paperback cover for Beige.

You may or may not have seen a few prior posts on pink covers here and here and here. (Oh…and here) I’m not exactly thrown by feminine colors one way or another, but you’ve gotta admit – grunge, shine, black and caps make for a pretty awesome ensemble. Fashioned by Candlewick’s in-house designer Kate Cunningham, the paperback cover for Beige takes on a completely different look to its hardcover predecessor:

And can we please discuss the general BAMF-ness* quality of the guitar? I honestly think the guitar as a standalone centerpiece puts this cover in the automatic pick-me-up-and-hold-me category. Similar to Five Flavors of Dumb, Beige’s cover reminds me a bit of a movie poster. It’s meant to be rolled out in 27″ x 40″ poster form on the outside of a theater, calling for you to stop and question what it’s about, who it will star, and when it will release. It could very well be a band tour poster, with Booklist’s blurb taking the place of Rolling Stone, SPIN, or Paste. I’m not quite sure what Candlewick’s team originally envisioned with Beige’s paperback cover, but this brilliant cover design definitely struck a chord with me. icon_wink-1778243

*BAMF-ness is not a real word. I totally made it up. I also realize the link explains that BAMF was used on Myspace, but still…I am not ashamed!
