cover love: the last three weeks

Nope, The Last Three Weeks isn’t an older read. Nor is it an ARC that’s going to be handed out this week at BEA. (Hi BEA friends! Hope you’re having fun!) I’ve been going 90mph in the last few weeks and haven’t had much time to investigate new goings-on in YA Cover Land, so here’s a quick post to show off a few notable covers that have popped up in my various feeds recently. For once, I’ll be keeping my commentary to a minimum.

Look, how ROMANTICAL. This cover makes me all tingly just like this one!

I need to know the story behind this smokey-faced key cover. Something tells me it has nothing to do with my Gmail account’s nifty archive feature.

Sarah Dessen cover makeovers! No more crotchety cartwheels! I’ve picked my favorites of the redesigns — thanks Heidi for the heads up!

Yeah, you can bet your bottom dollar I about lost my marbles when I saw Marie Lu post this on Twitter. The Japanese cover was illustrated by Tatsuyuki Tanaka (of Akira fame!). Just seeing this cover makes me want to re-read Legend, and I’m even more pumped for Prodigy’s release in January. Side note: I was a little bit proud that even with my rusty Japanese, I could read parts of the cover, namely Mah-ree Ru. ;)

If there are any covers that I’ve missed that you’d like to share, please post ‘em in the comments!

  1. I think the style for “The Archived” is actually where YA cover art is headed as the next trend. I’ve seen little bits of this cropping up lately, and I can only describe it as a cross between YA colors/bodies and Middle Grade fantastical artistic twists. It really looks like a grown up version of a lot of middle grade I’ve seen in the last year and a half. I like it, I think. It’s got the unfortunate potential to go weirdly avant garde, making us guess at the meaning of these seemingly unrelated objects. But I like artistic style covers, so I’m excited.

    • MG just seems to have more flexibility in terms of concept, though. It’s a bit disappointing to see that YA is just *now* seeming to be okay with stretching its arms. But I really ought to not be complaining!

      • Did you see the new cover for Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi? It’s exactly this high concept artistic grown up middle grade look. Very appropriately timed considering.

  2. Whoa, I love the Japanese Legend cover! Let the Sky Fall is great, too. Very pretty and not cookie cutter YA either.

  3. I need Let The Sky Fall in poster form – it is mindblowingly beautiful. Simple and THAT COLOR, WOW.

    Oh yeah, Hey Girl.

  4. I had the same reaction to the Japanese cover of Legend! I still haven’t read the book, but that alone makes me want to. LOVE IT. Also digging the smokey face of Archived, very intrigued.

Also I always liked measuring an author’s rise to success as their name gets bigger and their book titles smaller on covers. Sarah Dessen’s new covers are a pretty good example of that!

    • Oh you ought to read Legend, Heidi. Do please read it!

And yes, Sarah Dessen’s name is like on 1/3 of that cover. She’s got Koontz/King-like status now!

  5. Man, I wish we had that Japanese cover for Prodigy in the States.
Love Sarah Dessen’s new covers and Victoria Schwab’s. And when I saw Let the Sky Fall, I was thinking of The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson.

  6. I love the new Sarah Dessen covers. They are way better than they were before! Plus, they look cohesive now as well. I also really love the Let The Sky Fall cover.
