cover love: spoiled

Apparently I’ve been living under a rock, because I just now discovered that the Go Fug Yourself gals’ YA debut has a cover.

I have to admit that it’s pretty difficult to maintain an air of professionalism when all you want to do is go fangirl crazy over the fact that ahem, THE GO FUG YOURSELF GIRLS have a YA book to begin with. So I’ll spare you the fangirling with a dissection of Spoiled’s cover art instead.

What I love the most about the cover design: you can spot it from 10 million miles away. You’ve gotta hand it to Little, Brown/Poppy — they know their demo. This cover screams bright and fun, with a good colorful splash of humor. Well, not exactly “screams.” It sort-of bats its eyes at you and says in a sing-song voice, “Yoo-hoo! Hey you, there! Pick me up! You know you want to. I’m so much prettier than that Sad Girl in a Pretty Dress paranormal cover over there! Bless that girl’s heart, my authors are going to have a field day with that awful hairstyle!”

I love how Spoiled sets itself apart by doing something different. Its tagline is unobtrusive but catches your attention immediately because it seems to capture (what I assume to be) the sassy and snarky tone that I’m hoping is littered throughout this book. Does it matter if makeup is mentioned at all in this novel? No. Will this cover attract readers who don’t give a flip about nail polish and lip gloss? Absolutely.

Case in point: yours truly is so lazy, all she ever puts on is mascara and ChapStick. Also, a tiny part of me wishes I could get a makeover just by looking at this cover.

  1. I love this cover! All the colors pop and you are right there is no way Spoiled would blend in to the background. Great find!

  2. I JUST saw this cover on goodreads yesterday! haha It definitely caught my eye. I wear make up every day, but it’s the subtle tones.. nothing too crazy. I feel naked without it. I want that purple nail polish though! I happen to have green (as in Wizard of Oz GREEN!) on my toe nails at the moment :-)

    Great pick, C!

  3. This is such a fun and bright cover! It catches your eye immediately and the story sounds great too. Great pick :)

  4. Love the colours and that it looks like so much fun. The tagline is awesome and makes me want to read the book right now.

  5. Oh HOLY SHIZZ the go fug yourself girls have wrote a BOOK……..a YA BOOK?!?!? WHERE IS THE CHAMPAGNE WE NEED TO CELEBRATE! oh this cover gets the you, yes you award. hands down. I LUFFFFFFFF it.

  6. Will this cover attract readers who don’t give a flip about nail polish and lip gloss? Absolutely.

Yep! I only use lip gloss on a daily basis. The rest of the makeup only goes on during weekends or special events. I’m too lazy to do that kind of thing everyday. LOL.

    • I understand. I’m lucky if I can get out of the house without accidentally putting my shirt on backwards or something.

  7. LOVE IT. It’s so girly but not too girly that I think that my male YA-reader friends wouldn’t want to be caught dead holding this. :D

I think I actually use a bit more make up than you do, but I am far from using all products in this book. But still. :D

  8. I’m obsessed with this cover. It’s so much fun! Tons of readers will pick this up. I’m usually only crazy with my nail polish. At the moment, it’s a darker blue overlayed with a sheer blue, then topped off with that new OPI shatter that gave me black tiger stripes. It’s about a week old and starting to chip, though, so now I have to figure out what to do next!

  9. Um, how did I not even know they had one?! I kept thinking, “Hm, why do they tweet so many YA people? Are they secret real-life friends with Sarah Dessen?” I GET IT NOW! Thanks for the enlightenment, C!

  10. They have a book?!?! I don’t even like most non-fantasy YA, but I HAVE to read this!! And the cover is absolutely delicious.

  11. Aw, thanks so much for the nice comments! We seriously can’t stop looking at the ARCs we have — the designer did an amazing job. We really didn’t know what to expect for the cover, and when we got it, we were just blown away by how different and sassy it looks. I agree that I think both teens and older readers would be drawn to that in a store.

We can only hope you love the book as much!

  12. Ok folks, I think when this novel comes out we should all have one giant book club (and cover-lovin) session!
