when movie posters remind me of book covers

Does this movie poster look familiar to you?

When I first saw it, it reminded me immediately of Malinda Lo’s equally beautiful cover art for Ash.

Comparing a movie poster to a book’s cover design is saying something, dear publishers. I think there are a lot more people in this world who actually perceive graphic design at face value. Back when I interviewed Antony John on his Five Flavors of Dumb cover, he made the same observation. There’s definitely an impression that design and marketing make specifically for the eyes that take it in. The very same design that I pause to look at in the movie theater is also pulled from the same fabric that makes me pause in my bookstore or library.

I’ve seen the Swedish original Let the Right One In but I haven’t had the chance to read Ash yet. Both covers are similarly gorgeous, featuring minimal elements that make me feel sadness but also fill me with curiosity. I’m sure I’m much safer reading Ash than watching Let Me In in a dark room alone by myself, though.

Ash is a gorgeous book. Please do read it! It’s lovely.

  2. Antony John says:

Both of these “covers” are fantastic, in my opinion. The fetal overtones of LET ME IN are seriously freaky, and ASH is beautiful is a deliberately understated way. But you’re absolutely right: they’re amazingly similar!

  3. Ginger @ GReads! says:

Both of these covers make me feel sad – not sure why? the girls on each one look lonely & abandoned or something. They are very similar though. I wonder what else out there we could compare between movies & book covers.

  4. Anna says:

SO pretty. But also SO creepy. Conundrum! But I like.

Ash is SO good and lyrical and beautiful. Can’t wait for the sequel.

I’ve yet to read (wow, I wish I had a dollar for every time I wrote that on the internet) LET THE RIGHT ONE IN but I have it. I also have the original movie, but have yet to see the American or it.

Is that girl… lying in a pool of… blood? Wowww. Beautiful, in an intense and unsettling kind of way. Arguably one of the more unique kinds of beauty.

  7. Sarah says:

I saw Let the Right One In! And read the book. I hate that they “re-named” the book Let Me In to match the American version of the movie.

That is a really interesting movie poster though.

  8. A Paperback Writer says:

Yup, I thought of Ash (which is sitting in my TBR pile on my kitchen table right now) before I even scrolled down.
It also looks like another Twilight knockoff. Sigh. (and gag).

  9. Lindsi says:

I didn’t notice that until you pointed it out! They are really similar–I get a sense of sadness and foreboding whenever I look at them. But they are both absolutely gorgeous!

  10. Shanna says:

I read Ash, and I really thought it was boring. I was excited to read it, and I kept waiting for it to get good, and then…it ended.
